Japan's Meteorological Agency (JMA) has lifted a tsunami warning it issued after a strong 6.9- magnitude earthquake hit off northeastern Japan on Tuesday.

The quake, which occurred at 8:06 a.m. local time (2306 GMT Monday), was centered 210 km in the Pacific Ocean east of Miyagi Prefecture, with a depth of around 10 km.

The JMA issued an advisory against a 1-meter tsunami for Iwate Prefecture in northeastern Japan. Iwate's Kuji port has observed a tidal wave of about 20 cm and the JMA later removed the tsunami warning.
