Timor-Leste's new prime minister sworn in

Xinhua, February 17, 2015 Adjust font size:

Opposition party member and former Health Minister Rui Maria de Araujo was sworn in as Timor-Leste's prime minister in Dili on Monday, the government of Timor-Leste said in a statement.

Araujo was named as new prime minister last week by President Taur Matan Ruak, replacing Xanana Gusmao, a former guerrilla leader, who resigned at the beginning of this month.

"The members of the Sixth Government will put the interests of the people above any other partisan interests," Araujo said in his inaugural speech as quoted in the statement.

"We can do better by working together," Araujo added.

The 50-year-old new prime minister, whose term will last until 2017, joined the opposition Revolutionary Front for an Independent Timor-Leste party, or Fretilin in 2010.

Gusmao remains in the government, becoming minister of planning and strategic investment.

The country's sixth constitutional government with a smaller cabinet than the last one will meet for the first time on Tuesday morning. Endi
