Bike race on frozen bays held in Russia's Vladivostok

Xinhua, February 16, 2015 Adjust font size:

'Le Tour de Papenberg', a bike race on the frozen surface of Novik harbor near the Vladivostok's Russky Island, was held here on Sunday, attracting some 140 cyclists and outdoor activities fans.

Going for 20 kilometers along the extreme course, the traditional local race takes winter biking to the next level. All participants have to go to the end of the Novik harbor and back bypassing in the middle of the picturesque island of Papenberg which gave its name to the race.

The participants were divided into various age groups. The 'free' category was designed for the 'bikeless' - those who run, skate, and even ski.

"All of the bike races in Vladivostok were held only during summer. Now, in winter when all bays and harbors freeze over, our bikers have a chance to make it where you can't go in summer. You can see different scenery, experience new. So we decided to organize this type of race - the race on ice," the organizer Denis Yasinkov told Xinhua.

All the participants were awarded the original badges. The winners got the medals, certificates and souvenirs.

"Today we had strong headwings but I believed in myself and made it first," the 27-year-old winner Eugeniy Vitmanovsky told Xinhua.

'Le Tour de Papenberg' made its debut in 2014 and brought together some 50 participants. Endi
