A Sri Lankan peace group on Monday called for the creation of a post-war Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) with the power to grant amnesty to the accused who accepts the guilt and agrees to make amends.
The National Peace Council (NPC) said the issue of what happened in the last phase of the war, and accountability for war crimes that are alleged to have been committed, has dogged Sri Lanka's internal and external reconciliation process.
Sri Lanka has been attempting to reconcile the communities in the country following the end of a 30-year war in 2009.
"The value of a truth commission is that it will enable the multiple truths to emerge. This is that all communities suffered and were victimized," Jehan Perera, executive director of the NPC, told Xinhua.
"In my work at the grassroots level, I find a strong desire on the part of people to share their experience and find relief that way." Endi
