Actor Jude Law in Bolivia to promote carnival, meets with president

Xinhua, February 14, 2015 Adjust font size:

Bolivian President Evo Morales met Friday with English actor Jude Law who is visiting the country to promote Saturday's carnival celebrations.

The Carnaval de Oruro, as is known in Spanish, is Bolivia's biggest annual celebration and one of UNESCO's Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

The president presented the actor with a traditional Andean poncho and a publication about national hero Tupac Katari, an indigenous Indian who fought Spanish invaders more than 230 years ago.

The two-time Oscar nominee is set to take part in the carnival, as part of Morales' efforts to increase Bolivia's tourism earnings by raising the country's profile abroad.

The 10-day event in Oruro, capital of the western Oruro Department, features a parade of 20,000 dancers and 10,000 musicians that will last some 20 hours, and is estimated to draw more than 400,000 spectators.

Law, known for his role as Dr. Watson in the "Sherlock Holmes" films, said he was looking forward to the carnival celebrations this weekend and to visiting other parts of the country afterwards. Endit
