Australian Labor poised for victory in Queensland election

Xinhua, February 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

Queensland Labor Party leader Annastacia Palaszczuk is now in a position to form a minority government after most of the vote counting concluded on Friday.

The Electoral Commission of Queensland on Friday declared that Labor has won 44 of the 88 seats decided.

Labor has gained the support of independent Peter Wellington, which means Palaszczuk has control of 45 of the 88 seats to rule parliament.

There is only one remaining seat to be declared, which is expected to go to the Liberal National Party (LNP).

However Palaszczuk has said that she will not claim victory until that final seat is declared.

The LNP, which won a record majority in 2012, is now on 40 seats and is on track to win a further two seats.

The two remaining seats will go to the Katter's Australian Party MPs Robbie Katter and Shane Knuth, who are undecided who to support.

It is expected Queensland Governor Paul de Jersey will now call on Palaszczuk to form government later Friday. Endi
