Portuguese pharmacies to collect donated drugs for charities

Xinhua, February 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

Over 130 pharmacies across Portugal are expected to collect over-the-counter drugs for charitable institutions in donation activities to be held on Saturday, according to a statement from Banco Farmaceutico, a charity responsible for organizing the event, on Thursday.

Around 500 volunteers have signed up for the collection to be held between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday. The medications that are collected will be offered to social charities in the districts of Lisbon, Steubal, Santarem, Evora, Beja, Portalegre, Faro, Aveiro, Porto, Vila Real and Braganca.

The collection is intended to "raise the awareness of the Portuguese population about donating medication and health products that do not require a prescription" at pharmacies, where the pharmacist can guarantee the quality of the donated drugs, Banco Farmaceutico said in its statement.

Only new, sealed medications that are currently permitted to be sold on the Portuguese market may be donated.

Last year the medication drive collected 10,000 medications and health products worth a total of 40,000 euros at 122 pharmacies. The donated medications were distributed in the south of the country in 2014 and this year donations will also be sent to charitable institutions in northern Portugal, according to Banco Farmaceutico.
