Serbian PM to attend Croatian president-elect's inauguration

Xinhua, February 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic announced on Thursday he would attend Croatian president-elect Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic's inauguration on Feb. 15 in Zagreb.

Vucic said his visit was to "carry the message of peace and cooperation to Zagreb."

"We want to improve the relations (between Serbia and Croatia). We strive to improve relations in the region, which will benefit both our people and the Croatian people," adding that for his part, he would work on regional stability.

Vucic will become the first Serbian prime minister to attend the inauguration of Croatian president since 2005. Former Serbian President Boris Tadic attended the inauguration of former Croatian President Stjepan Mesic for his second presidential term in 2005.

Unresolved problems between Croatia and Serbia after the war in the 1990s, such as the locations of missing persons from the war and genocide legal proceedings before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, have made the bilateral relations unstable.

Earlier this month, the ICJ rejected law suits of genocide from both countries.

Grabar-Kitarovic won the presidential elections in January, defeating incumbent President Ivo Josipovic. Endti
