The Democratic National Committee on Thursday announced that it had selected Philadelphia as the site of the party's 2016 national convention.
"Philadelphia's deep-rooted place in American history provides a perfect setting for this special gathering. I cannot wait to join Democrats across the country to celebrate our shared values, lay out a Democratic vision for the future, and support our nominee," said committee chief Florida Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz in a statement.
The Democratic National Committee said the event is scheduled for the week of July 25, 2016, a week after Republicans hold their national convention in Cleveland, the state of Ohio.
The last time Philadelphia ever hosted a presidential convention was in 2000, when Republicans chose the then Texas Governor George W. Bush as the party's nominee.
Philadelphia is the largest city in Pennsylvania, a traditional swing state Republicans see as a place they can win in 2016. Endite
