Toddler successfully rescued from hypothermia in Poland

Xinhua, February 12, 2015 Adjust font size:

A two-year-old boy was successfully saved from deep hypothermia and sent home after more than two months of treatment and rehabilitation, doctors from the University Children's Hospital of Cracow said on Thursday, hailing the case as a success on a global scale.

The boy was brought to the hospital in Cracow on November 30 after he became unconscious after sneaking out of his grandmother's home alone at night in cold weather. Wearing only pyjamas, the boy's body temperature fell to 12.7 degrees Celsius when he was found by the police near a creek.

The average human body temperature is 37 degrees Celsius. Until now, the lowest body temperature of the person rescued from hypothermia in the world was 13.7 degrees Celsius.

According to specialists, rescuing anyone in such a deep hypothermia is almost a miracle.

After being taken to the hospital, the boy was put under a device allowing extracorporeal blood oxygenation.

After three days, he woke up from a coma and spent some time breathing with the aid of a respirator. The child has spent almost two-and-a-half months at the hospital. According to the doctors, he can walk on his own, but still needs rehabilitation to improve his manual efficiency. Endit
