Afghan army operations kill 21 militants

Xinhua, February 12, 2015 Adjust font size:

About 21 militants have been killed as Afghan army launched cleanup operations in six provinces within the last 24 hours, the Defense Ministry said on Thursday.

"A total of 21 militants were killed, 17 were wounded, and 15 militants detained following cleanup operations launched in six provinces out of 34 Afghan provinces over the past 24 hours," the ministry said in a statement providing daily operational updates.

Seven Afghan army soldiers lost their lives as a result of separate roadside bomb attacks over the same period, according to the statement.

The army specialists have recovered and defused 50 roadside bombs and landmines besides seizing a weapon depot during the operations, said the statement.

Since Jan. 1 this year, Afghan security forces have assumed the full security charges from NATO and U.S. forces after the NATO-led troops switched from combat to support role.

The Taliban militant group has yet to make comments. Endi
