Tokyo stocks gain 1.64 pct on weaker yen

Tokyo stocks gained 1.64 percent in the morning session of Thursday as market sentiment was lifted by the yen's depreciation against the U.S. dollar.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 289.65 points from Tuesday to 17,942.33.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange moved 21.47 points higher, or 1.50 percent, to 1,449.19. Financial markets in Japan were closed Wednesday for a national holiday.

Major gainers included land transport, retail and insurance issues. Endi
