U.S. Navy chief in New Zealand for talks on greater collaboration

Xinhua, February 12, 2015 Adjust font size:

The top U.S. Navy commander arrived in New Zealand Thursday in a visit to build closer cooperation between the two services.

U.S. Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Jonathan W. Greenert would visit Wellington and Auckland on his two-day visit and be hosted by New Zealand Chief of Navy Rear Admiral Jack Steer.

Greenert would discuss a range of matters, including coordinated responses to international humanitarian assistance and disaster relief events, Steer said in a statement.

New Zealand and the United States worked together in areas including exercises such as RIMPAC (Rim of the Pacific), the world 's largest multilateral naval exercise with 22 other nations, the international counter-piracy taskforce, and multinational humanitarian assistance activities such as Pacific Partnership.

"I know our people have learnt a lot working with the United States Military and Admiral Greenert's visit builds further on our excellent working relationship," Steer said.

The visit is part of a regional tour.

In Canberra earlier this week, Greenert discussed the possibility of basing U.S. warships in Australia. Endi
