Slovakia changes asylum policies

Xinhua, February 12, 2015 Adjust font size:

Slovak asylum policies will follow two EU directives which will improve how refugee children are treated, decided the Slovak government on Wednesday.

The amendment deals with underage refugees who arrive in Slovakia as unaccompanied minors. Under the EU directives, the juveniles will no longer be placed in refugee camps.

The children "will be free to stay in social-legal protection facilities and under social guardianship," explained Marta Fabianova, spokesperson of the Slovak interior ministry.

According to Fabianova, unaccompanied minors will be allowed to stay at a home for children even after the transition to adulthood if they request, and can arrange such an agreement with the children's home.

The interior ministry has recently recorded a low figure of unaccompanied minors seeking asylum. In 2012, five proceedings concerning granting asylum were launched, in 2013 it was only four instances. A total of 11 proceedings were started in 2014. Enditem
