Kenya opposes release of US-wanted suspected drug barons on bail

Xinhua, February 11, 2015 Adjust font size:

Kenyan prosecutors on Tuesday filed an appeal to the high court in the city of Mombasa, objecting to the release of four suspected top drug traffickers awaiting to be extradited to the United States for international drug trafficking.

Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Keriako Tobiko told the court that Bakhtash Akasha Abdalla, Vijaygiri Anandgiri, Gulam Hussein and Ibrahim Akasha Abdalla might interfere with the extradition proceeding.

"The DPP was dissatisfied with the decision of Justice Martin Muya, and intends to appeal in the court against it," said DPP assistant Alexander Muteti, calling the four drug suspects a "flight risk".

On Monday, Justice Muya released the four accused on 330,000 U. S. dollars bail each, with two Kenyan sureties.

The four are waiting extradition to the U.S. where they have been accused of conspiring with an international drug cartel to import narcotics.

They were arrested during a joint operation between the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Kenyan anti-drug reinforcement unit late last year.

Their extradition proceeding will continue till Feb. 16. Endi
