The 9th Sri Lanka Army contingent of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) will leave to assume Force Protection duties in Lebanon shortly, the army said in a short statement on Tuesday.

The 9th Sri Lanka's Force Protection Unit (9 SLFPU) comprising 10 officers and 140 other rankers will replace the currently serving 8th contingent.

"The first advance segment of the SLFPU contingent of four officers and 11 other rankers left for Lebanon on Friday to take up duties. The remaining contingent members are scheduled to leave on Feb. 15 and 25," the statement said.

The currently serving 8th Sri Lankan contingent was recently honored at a prestigious military ceremony at the UNIFIL headquarters in Naqoura, Lebanon for their exemplary dedication. They will return to country on February 23.

The SLFPU in Lebanon, responsible for security and VIP duties at the UNIFIL Force Headquarters Naqoura, controls all the access routes to the UNIFIL headquarters and is under command to the Force Headquarters Support Unit (FHQSU) which is directly under the Force Commander. Endi
