Fijian peacekeepers to head for Lebanon

Xinhua, February 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

A total of 146 Fijian peacekeepers serving in Syria are expected to cross the border to Lebanon on Tuesday for peacekeeping duties, local media reported.

Sitiveni Qilio, land force commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces told news website Fijivillage.com that the 146 Fijians are to return home in either July or August depending on when the United Nations secures a carrier to fly them home.

Replacements of the 146 personnel will be sent from Fiji once they arrive home safely, Qilio added.

Last year, 45 Fijian peacekeepers were captured and later released by al-Nusra Front militants in Syria.

Fiji has deployed over 1,000 peacekeepers to foreign countries such as Syria, Egypt, Iraq, South Sudan, Sudan and Liberia. Endi
