2 Israeli smugglers shot dead on Israel-Egypt border

Xinhua, February 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

Two Israeli smugglers were shot dead early Tuesday as they were trying to cross into Egypt, Israel's military said.

A military spokesperson said the men were killed by Egyptian fire near the border crossing of Nitzana.

According to the spokesperson, Israeli soldiers "shot warning shots into the air but did not strike the smugglers."

Drug packages were found on the site, the spokesperson added.

The Israel-Egypt border, which stretches over more than 240 km along the Sinai desert, has been a site of drug trafficking for many years.

The latest incident occurred in October, when a violent confrontation with drug smugglers left two Israeli soldiers moderately wounded. Enditem
