Unknown gunmen on Monday shot dead a Somali lawmaker near a presidential village in Mogadishu, a government official confirmed.

Somali lawmaker Abdulah Ahmed Hussein said the deceased, Abdulah Qayad Bare, was driving from his home in Hamar jajab district when assailants drove by and shot at his car, killing him instantly.

Police said the shooting took place just less than a kilometer away from the parliament where the legislator was set to attend a parliamentary session on approval of the new cabinet.

Bare becomes the sixth lawmaker to be killed in the last one year in Somalia.

Somalia militant group Al-Shabaab later claimed responsibility for the attack. Endi
