Colombia welcomes Andean Community's decision on tariff

Xinhua, February 8, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Colombian government on Saturday welcomed the decision by the General Secretariat of the Andean Community of Nations to overrule Ecuador's 21 percent tariff imposed on Colombian goods.

"The Andean Community issued from Lima the resolution No. 1762, which denies permission for the implementation of transitory corrective measures ... proposed by the government of Ecuador to imports from Colombia and Peru," the Colombian Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism said in a statement.

According to the ministry, the document issued by the regional organization calls on Ecuador to immediately eliminate the tax, "and recommends establishing mechanisms to refund the companies affected by the implementation of the measure," which came into force in January 2015.

Ecuador alleged that the measure was based on the fact that the Colombian currency devaluation against the U.S. dollar was affecting the industry.

The Andean Community's decision, said the Colombian statement, "is a call to strengthen the constructive dialogue between Colombia and Ecuador that has occurred in recent weeks and has enabled decisions to moderate the economic impact on both sides." Endi
