Cambodia, Qatar set to boost bilateral ties, regional cooperation

Xinhua, February 7, 2015 Adjust font size:

Cambodian and Qatar senior officials met here on Saturday to discuss possibility of promoting bilateral ties and regional cooperation for the benefits of the two countries.

The meeting was held between Cambodian Foreign Ministry Secretary of State Ouch Borith and Mohamed Bin Abdulla Al-Rumaihi, assistant minister for Foreign Affairs of Qatar.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Borith said the discussion was aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation in all fields, especially in agriculture and tourism.

"We agreed to expedite the signing of some bilateral documents, including a memorandum of understanding on political consultations, a deal on higher education cooperation, an economic and trade cooperation agreement, and an investment protection pact," he said.

The agreements are expected to be inked during Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Hor Namhong's visit to Qatar, he said, adding that an exact date of Hor Namhong's trip to Qatar is unavailable yet.

According to Borith, currently, the two countries have inked two pacts. One was on the manpower, and the other on the air services.

"The air service agreement has already been implemented as Qatar Airways has operated regular flights to Cambodia (since 2013) , while the manpower pact has not been carried out yet," he said. Under the manpower deal, Cambodia will send labourers to Qatar.

At the request of Cambodia, he said, Qatar also promised to support Cambodia for a member of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and an observer state at the 57-country Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

Qatar also pledged to provide scholarships for Cambodian students to study petroleum engineering, he said.

The two officials also exchanged views on the current situation in the Middle East. Endi
