Fifty-nine researchers in Europe received funding of up to 150,000 euros (about 171,000 U.S. dollars) to turn their inventions into viable products, the European Commission said on Thursday.
The grants would allow the researchers to build start-ups, establish intellectual property rights for their inventions or explore other ways to test their ideas on the market.
Researchers from 15 countries, including the Netherlands, Britain, Spain, France and Israel received the grants.
"This will help improve our ability to bring innovations to market, boost competitiveness and create the jobs and growth needed in Europe," said Carlos Moedas, Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science of the EU.
Set up in 2007 by the EU, the European Research Council is the first European funding organization for excellent frontier research. (1 euro = 1.14 U.S. dollars) Endit
