Japan's imported auto sales down in January

Japan's imported new vehicle sales in January plunged 17.4 percent year on year to 20,829 units, according to the Japan Automobile Importers Association Thursday.

Sales of foreign brands in the month dropped 14.5 percent to 17, 179 units, while those of Japanese brands built abroad sustained a decline of 28.9 percent to 3,650 units.

By brand, Mercedes-Benz ranked top with 4,557 units, up 12.8 percent for a market share of 21.88 percent. Volkswagen and BMW clinched second and third places with 3,760 and 2,186 units, respectively, down by 35.8 percent and 19.9 percent.

Among Japanese brands, Nissan went down 27.4 percent to 2,273 units, while Toyota sold 990 units, down 22.6 percent.

Separate data showed earlier that the country's new auto sales in January dropped 19.1 percent from a year earlier to 401,366 vehicles, the first decline in two months and the sharpest fall in more than three years. Endi
