Gunmen attack school, loot belongings in Burundi

Xinhua, February 4, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least 20 gunmen Tuesday attacked a school at Gasenyi in Buganda, in the province of Cibitoke, 50 km west of the Burundian capital Bujumbura, a police official told Xinhua by phone on Wednesday.

"Between 10 and 20 armed bandits attacked the boarding school run by the Adventist Church. During the attack that targeted the boys' dormitory and that lasted few minutes, the bandits stole an unknown amount of money, two mattresses, clothes and mobile phones, " said Eugene Bizindavyi, Police Commissioner in the province of Cibitoke.

According to Bizindavyi, those bandits "did not hurt" any pupil or agent at the school.

He said the attack occurred around midnight local time (22:00 GMT), adding that the attackers were just "armed bandits."

"Security measures have been taken to prevent other attacks in schools in the province of Cibitoke," Bizindavyi said.

On the eve of the New Year of 2015, more than 100 gunmen from the Democratic Republic of Congo's territory made an incursion into the province of Cibitoke via the commune of Murwi and fought for four days against the Burundian army.

During those clashes, Burundi Army Spokesman Colonel Gaspard Baratuza said that 95 gunmen, two soldiers and two civilians were killed. Endi
