11 killed in bus collision in southwestern Russia

Xinhua, February 4, 2015 Adjust font size:

Eleven people died and five others were injured in a head-on collision near the Russia-Ukraine border, Russia's Interior Ministry said Wednesday.

A minibus with a Ukrainian registration plate carrying 14 passengers, reportedly Ukrainian nationals, crossed into an oncoming traffic lane and hit a large truck in Russia's southwest region of Belgorod on Wednesday morning, according to the ministry.

The minibus driver and nine passengers were killed at the scene and another person was confirmed dead later. Five passengers were severely injured and taken to hospital.

According to preliminary investigation, the cause of the collision might be the negligence of the minibus driver.

"The minibus driver might have fallen asleep," said an official of the Russian Interior Ministry.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Yevhen Perebiynis said that the ministry was verifying the alleged presence of Ukrainian citizens in the accident. Endi
