Fiji congratulates Italy's newly-elected president

Fijian Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has congratulated Italy's newly-elected President Sergio Mattarella, the Fijian government said Wednesday.

In his message to the Italian president, Bainimarama said Fiji looks forward to strengthening relations between the two countries, according to Fiji's Department of Information.

"On behalf of the government and the people of the Republic of Fiji, I extend our warmest congratulations to you on your recent election as the president of the Republic of Italy," the Fijian prime minister said, "I wish you a successful term and look forward to the continued cooperation and the strengthening of friendly relations between our two countries."

"Please accept, Your Excellency, my wishes of personal health and happiness, as well as prosperity for the people of the Republic of Italy," added Bainimarama.

Mattarella, 73, won a majority vote in parliament on Saturday, and was sworn in on Tuesday. Endi
