Nikkei slips to nearly 2-week low on soft U.S. data

Tokyo stocks ended 1.27 percent lower on Tuesday, with its benchmark Nikkei stock index slipping to a nearly two-week low on soft U.S. manufacturing data.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was down 222.19 points from Monday at 17,335.85, its lowest close since Jan. 22.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange closed 16.36 points, or 1.16 percent, lower at 1,392.39.

Major decliners included shipping, airlines and rubber issues.

The turnover was 2,695.8 billion yen (about 23.03 billion U.S. dollars). Endi
