U.S. consumers earn more, spend less in December

U.S. consumers' personal income rose while spending fell in December, as shoppers responded to early promotions by doing most of their holiday shopping in November, the Commerce Department reported on Monday.

Personal spending fell 0.3 percent following an increase of 0.5 percent in November. Personal income increased 0.3 percent after a rise of 0.3 percent a month earlier.

Advance estimate showed that the U.S. economy grew 2.6 percent in the fourth quarter last year. Personal consumption, which accounts for about 70 percent of the U.S. economy, grew 4.3 percent, compared with an increase of 3.2 percent in the third quarter. Endite
