large area of agricultural land in Albania in flood: report

Xinhua, February 3, 2015 Adjust font size:

Floods triggered by heavy rains have inundated more than 3,000 hectares of farm land in Albania and caused heavy losses of livestock, local media reported on Monday.

The situation has aggravated as the country was swept by a record level of heavy rain, the Albanian Telegraphic Agency cited Albanian Minister of Agriculture Edmond Panariti as saying.

Vast areas of arable land, mainly in the region of Fier and Vlora in south of Albania were flooded after the Vjosa river burst its banks.

The severe flood has forced Albanian government to implement a backup plan for the evacuation of residents and the livestock. Pumping stations are working at full capacity to get flood water out of primary and secondary ditches, according to the report. Endit
