Tokyo stocks open lower on weaker-than-expected U.S. growth data

Tokyo stocks opened lower early Monday following declines on Wall Street as data showed the U.S. economy grew slower than expected in the fourth quarter of 2014.

At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was down 138. 43 points, or 0.78 percent, from Friday to 17,535.96.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange shed 12.37 points, or 0.87 percent, to 1,402. 70.

Major decliners included airlines, rubber as well as glass and ceramics issues. Endi
