European Council President Donald Tusk here on Saturday congratulated Sergio Mattarella on his election as Italian President.

"Italy has chosen a much respected and experienced politician as head of state. His conviction and sense of justice will help Italy to continue playing a leading role in Europe," Tusk said in a statement.

Tusk also expressed appreciation to outgoing Italian President Giorgio Napolitano for his contribution to Italian political stability.

Mattarella, a lawyer and Constitutional Court judge, earlier on Saturday was elected as the new Italian president at the fourth round of voting following days of consultations among political parties. Endit
