Bahrain revokes nationality of 72 people

Xinhua, January 31, 2015 Adjust font size:

Bahrain said on Saturday that it had revoked the nationality of 72 people as part of measures to "protect the security and stability" of the Kingdom.

The Bahraini Interior Ministry released a list of the 72 people affected by the measure.

Included in the list was Turki Al Binali, who reportedly has links with the Islamic State (IS) militant group.

The ministry said that the move was part of its responsibility to fight terrorism and identify those who engage, encourage or take part in "terrorist acts".

"Each citizen of Bahrain has the responsibility to act in ways that do not harm the interests of the kingdom," it said.

In 2012, Bahraini authorities stripped 30 opposition activists of their nationality.

The tiny Gulf state has been rocked by unrest since a 2011 Shiite-led uprising demanding a constitutional monarchy and more representative government. Endit
