Fiji, El Salvador establish diplomatic ties

Xinhua, January 31, 2015 Adjust font size:

Fiji and El Salvador have established diplomatic relations, the Fijian government announced Saturday.

At a ceremony at the Permanent Mission of Fiji to the United Nations in New York earlier this week, Peter Thomson, Fiji's permanent representative to the UN and Ruben Armando Escalante Hasbun, charge d'affaires of El Salvador's Permanent Mission to the UN signed a joint communique establishing diplomatic relations between the two states, according to Fiji's Department of Information.

"The communique conveys the agreement of both States for their diplomatic relations to be based on the principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter and international law, particularly in the maintenance of international peace and security, equality among States, respect of national sovereignty, territorial integrity and non-interference in the internal affairs of other States," the department said in a statement.

It added that the communique expresses the desire of both states to strengthen bonds of friendship and cooperation.

Following the ceremony, the two diplomats held talks on areas of common interest between their countries and potential areas of cooperation at the UN. Endi
