Kenya to hold UN Water Meeting

Xinhua, January 31, 2015 Adjust font size:

Water experts from across the world are due to meet in Kenya's capital Nairobi next week to discuss escalating water insecurity, organizers said Friday.

The UN Environment Program (UNEP) said the 22nd UN Water Meeting, which starts on Feb. 2, will discuss solutions to the dire consequences of waste water on human health, ecosystems and biodiversity.

Water security is under increasing threat, with only 20 percent of global waste water currently being treated, leaving low-income countries the most hit by contaminated water supplies and disease, according to a UN report.

The report urges governments to see treated waste water as a valuable resource.

The three-day meeting will discuss low-tech, low-cost, on-site solutions which could be available in low-income countries, the organizers said. Endi
