Feature: Food-themed Expo Milano 2015 puts culture as special dish

Xinhua, January 30, 2015 Adjust font size:

Expo Milano 2015, which will kick off in less than 100 days, promises not only to serve up the best dishes of the world, but also to nourish the minds of visitors with cultural events.

Bearing the theme "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life," the world exposition which runs from May 1 to Oct. 31, lends itself very well to gastronomic experiences: hundreds of ethnic restaurants, coffee bars and refreshment areas surrounded by all kinds of food shows will take place.

It is fundamental, however, to keep in mind that the Expo Milano 2015 "will not be a fair of typical products, but an exposition on nutrition evolution," Expo Sole Commissioner of the Italian government Giuseppe Sala told a press conference on Thursday.

A rich program of cultural events, including many centered on food-related topics, has been announced which will animate Milan and the whole of Italy during the six-month expo.

The crucial need to feed the planet with a sustainable approach to nutrition will be at the heart of daytime conferences, meetings and workshops on schedule at the site spanning 1.1 million square meters in the north-western part of Milan.

Sala highlighted that more than 500 people will work to deliver the Milan Charter, a protocol which will bind countries to food and development related objectives, to United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon when he visits the expo on Oct. 16.

Meanwhile, the "expo by night" initiative will feature circus company Cirque du Soleil and spectacles organized by different countries every night.

Many educational activities have also been designed for children.

Among the various cultural events, from April 15 to July 19, Milan will feature the biggest exhibition ever organized in Italy of Leonardo da Vinci's work with paintings, drawings and manuscripts of the Renaissance icon borrowed from Italian and international museums.

The event will also focus on photography, contemporary art and an interactive exhibition scheduled until June 28 in the city's Museum of Natural History to analyze the world of food from a scientific point of view.

A website, in Italian and soon available in English, Chinese and other languages, was launched last week. Endit
