German security personnel strikes curb air traffic

Xinhua, January 29, 2015 Adjust font size:

Thousands of travelers were affected by security personnel strikes at Cologne-Bonn and Dusseldorf airports on Thursday, German media reported on Thursday.

According to a spokesman for Germany's Ver.di trade union, the walkout in Cologne began at midnight local time (2300 GMT), while the Dusseldorf walkout started at 3:00 a.m. local time (0200 GMT).

The Cologne-Bonn airport announced that a total of 34 departures and two arrivals on Thursday would be cancelled as a result.

The Dusseldorf airport also said flight and handling operation expected to be affected on Thursday due to the strike.

Ver.di emphasized that the one-day strike was the final warning to employers after three unsuccessful rounds of negotiations.

The strikes are over the current collective bargaining for the security industry in Germany. Ver.di insisted on wage increases between 1.50 euros and 2.50 euros (between 1.70 and 2.83 U.S. dollars) per hour. The Ver.di didn't give details on the standard hour salary.

Last Friday, Ver.di called on the security staff at Stuttgart and Hamburg airports to participate in the walkout. Enditem
