Flights, trains suspended as snow hits northern England

Xinhua, January 29, 2015 Adjust font size:

Flights and rail services were disrupted in some northern regions as heavy snow hit England Thursday, local media reported.

A spokesman for Manchester Airport said it had currently suspended all departures and arrivals for a short period. The airport was closed at around 9:30 a.m. local time (0930 GMT), while snowploughs were dispatched to clear the runways.

Meanwhile, local media reported that flights at Newcastle International Airport and Humberside Airport in Northern Lincolnshire were also delayed as snow continued to fall.

More than a dozen rail services between Manchester and York were cancelled, as were some main roads in Durham and Yorkshire.

Local media said hundreds of schools were closed in northern England.

The Met Office, the UK's weather service, issued yellow warnings of snow and ice on Thursday morning, saying sleet, snow, and hail would continue through the rest of Thursday and into Friday morning. Endit
