Iran's Foreign Ministry picked the country's new envoy to the United Nations, Press TV reported on Wednesday.
"Gholamali Khoshroo has been appointed as the Islamic Republic of Iran's ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations headquarters in New York," a statement by Iranian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.
Back in April 2014, U.S. President Barack Obama signed a law which barred Iranian diplomat Hamid Aboutalebi from serving as Tehran's ambassador to the UN.
The legislation was based on a bill in the U.S. Congress alleging that the Iranian diplomat was involved in the takeover of the U.S. embassy in Tehran following the Islamic Revolution in 1979.
Iran condemned the decision, saying that it is clearly against the principles of international law and also the UN Charter.
Iran has appointed Khoshroo to protect the national interests of the country to the fullest extent possible and promote the country's international position, "especially considering the current critical condition in the region and the world," the statement was cited as saying.
Khoshroo is Iran's current ambassador to Switzerland. The diplomat has served in various positions in Iran's Foreign Ministry. He was deputy foreign minister for legal and International affairs between 2002 and 2005 when Iran started its nuclear negotiations with world powers.
Khoshroo once served as Iran's envoy to the UN from 1989 to 1995. Endit
