1st LD Writethru: India sacks foreign secretary, appoints U.S. envoy in her place

India Wednesday night sacked its Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh and named its Ambassador to the United States S. Jaishankar as the top diplomat.

Sources said that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was unhappy with Singh and was waiting for U.S. President Barack Obama 's visit to end.

Singh was due to retire in August this year.

The new foreign secretary had earlier served as Indian ambassador to China, and is said to have played a key role in the Indo-U.S. civil nuclear deal, which was sealed this week after six years of hiccups. Endi
