Wawrinka stuns Nishikori to reach Australian Open semis

Xinhua, January 28, 2015 Adjust font size:

Stan Wawrinka stayed on course to defend his Australian Open title after sealing a straight-set win over Japanese fifth seed Kei Nishikori in the quarter-final here on Wednesday.

The Swiss won 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (8/6) in just over two hours for sweet revenge on his elimination of last year's U.S. Open by Nishikori.

Though Wawrinka broke only three times in three sets today, he lost serve just once and won 86 percent of his first-serve points.

After wasting five match points in the tiebreak of the third set, the fourth seed terminated the suspense by an ace which speed is 209 kilometers per hour.

"I am still nervous about that tiebreak, I was a bit defensive, it's never easy, you have to go for it and I'm happy to get through," Wawrinka said about blowing five match points.

"It's going to be a tough one in the semi, but I'm playing well so I am happy to be back again to be playing in the semi-final. I will watch tonight's match and then practice tomorrow," he added. Endi
