"The Hobbit" rules China's box office

Oscar-winning director Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" took the lead in China's box office in the week ending Jan. 25 grossing 319 million yuan (about 50 million U.S. dollars).

The action-fantasy, which wraps up Jackson's six-film franchise that started with "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" in 2001 was opened on Friday.

The second spot went to "Miss Granny," a co-production between China and the Republic of Korea (ROK), with 77 million yuan, China Film News reported Wednesday. The rom-com, which debuted on Jan. 8, has so far brought a total box office earnings of 327 million yuan.

Not far behind was "Seven's Son," a fantasy starring American actor Jeff Bridges and actress Julianne Moore, earned 60.8 million yuan. Its total box office stood at 164 million yuan since the opening day of Jan. 16.

"Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb," the third movie in the Ben Stiller franchise, came in fourth, pulling in about 39 million yuan during the week. Its total box office hit 305 million yuan since the opening day of Jan. 4.

Rounding out the top-five list was acclaimed Hong Kong director Tsui Hark's "The Taking of Tiger Mountain," which raked in 22.7 million yuan in the week. The 3D war film, which debuted on Dec. 23 and stars Tony Leung Ka Fai, has so far brought a total box office earning of 874.9. million yuan. Endi
