Senegal to battle Algeria in crucial Group C 2015 Afcon

Xinhua, January 28, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Malabo Stadium will host a crucial Group C game between Algeria and Senegal on Tuesday in the on-going 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).

Algeria who reached the knock out stage of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil badly need a win if they hope to brighten their chances of reaching the last eight. Coach Christian Gourcuff's team started with a 3-1 win over South Africa, before falling to a last 1-0 loss to Ghana.

"We have no choice but to go on the pitch and fight for a win," Qatar based Rafik Halliche told Xinhua in an interview.

The bad news for the Desert Fennecs as the Algerian team is called is that key striker Islam Slimani will miss the game because of injury. The Sports Lisbon player who scored in the win over South Africa picked an injury.

In the absence of Slimani, the likes of Sofiane Feghouli, Nabil Bentaleb, Foued Kadir should be able to lead Algeria in their search for victory.

Senegal's Coach, Allian Giresse said facing Algeria will not be an easy game because they are one of the teams with the best talent on the tournament. "We shall make sure we play as a team and defend well because Algeria are very dangerous on offensive," he said.

The four England based players; Cheikhou Kouyate (West Ham Utd), Mame Biram Diouf (Stoke City), Sadio Mane (Southampton) and NewCastle's Papiss Demba Cisse are expected to have a chance to feature in that crucial game. Endite
