Nepal's ruling parties call on opposition to sit for talks

Xinhua, January 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

Nepal's 10-party ruling alliance on Tuesday appealed to the opposition parties to come to negotiations in a bid to end the current stalemate in the constitution drafting process.

The ruling party alliance said in a press statement that there is no alternative to consensus. The opposition front has been urged to be a part of Questionnaire Committee.

The opposition bloc led by UCPN (Maoist), however, said that it would not sit for talks until ruling parties agree to cancel the committee, which was formed with an aim of initiating a voting process on contentious issues concerning new constitution.

There has not been any dialogue between the ruling and opposition parties from Sunday.

"We always try to resolve the problems through dialogues and consensus. We are working to draft the new constitution through unanimous consensus if not through enough consensus," read the statement.

The opposition alliance, however, has announced the street protest, saying that there is no meaning of talks with the ruling parties. After Nepal missed January 22 constitution promulgation, there have not been talks among the parties.

Ruling parties are threatening to move ahead on the basis of their majority strength, while opposition parties have said that constitution should be drafted on the basis of consensus.

With the missing of deadline, the prospect of new constitution in Nepal is uncertain. Endi
