5,000 people displaced by weekend violence in Nigeria

Xinhua, January 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

A total of 5,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) have been registered following Sunday's attack by insurgents on Monguno in northeastern Nigeria's state of Borno, a rescue agency spokesperson said Monday.

Hundreds of insurgents using sophisticated weapons launched attacks on Monguno, destroyed property, killed and injured scores of residents of the town.

Abdulkadir Ibrahim, an information officer with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), said in a statement reaching Xinhua that it has so far registered 5,000 IDPs trooping into Maiduguri following last Sunday's attack on Monguno.

He said that Maiduguri, a state government housing estate under construction on Gubio Road, has been converted to a refugee camp for the displaced.

Since 2009, Nigeria has been under the siege of terrorism, engendered by an Islamic sect called Boko Haram. Members of the sect have carried out series of bombings of public places and killed many innocent citizens. Enditem
