Winter session of PACE opens with urgent debate on Paris attacks

Xinhua, January 27, 2015 Adjust font size:

"The acts of terrorism in Paris were an assault on our fundamental values," declared President Anne Brasseur of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) in her opening address to the 2015 winter session on Monday.

Following the terrorist attacks which occurred in Paris and its vicinity from Jan. 7 to Jan. 9, the PACE Bureau of the Assembly proposed an amendment the opening session's agenda to include an urgent debate on the events. The debate, titled "Terrorist attacks in Paris: Together for a democratic response," was accepted by the assembly, and will take place on the morning of Wednesday, Jan. 28, with a resolution to follow.

The week-long session, from Jan. 26 to Jan. 30, will feature debates on reform of the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) and issues concerning mass surveillance, as well as an address from Republic of Ireland President Michael Higgins.

"It's going to be a very difficult week, with difficult topics," Brasseur said during a press conference on Monday morning. Endit
