UN headquarters closed due to snowstorm

The United Nations headquarters complex is closed Monday afternoon and will remained closed Tuesday due to a severe snowstorm in New York and the surrounding region.

The UN spokesperson's office issued the notice around noon, saying the UN headquarters complex is closed from 2:30 p.m. EST ( 1930 GMT), as well as on Tuesday.

The planned events to mark the International Holocaust Remembrance Day at the UN headquarters on Tuesday, including Israeli President Reuven Rivlin's speech at the UN General Assembly, are rescheduled to take place on Wednesday, if the weather allows, the office said.

The U.S. National Weather Service issued a blizzard warning for New York City and surrounding areas between coastal New Jersey and Connecticut, beginning 1 p.m. EST (1800 GMT) Monday and worsening overnight into Tuesday morning.

A number of meetings have been rescheduled at the UN headquarters due to the weather on Monday. The UN Security Council meeting on the Ukrainian issue, which started on Monday afternoon earlier than planned due to the weather, ended shortly after 3:15 p.m. Endite
