Sarajevo International airport handled some 700,000 passengers in 2014, a new record, the airport said on Monday.

"Business results significantly contribute to the introduction of new lines. We have an increase in the number of flight operations and growth in all centers," Director Ivica Velican said at a press conference.

Sarajevo International Airport currently hosts 11 airline companies, including Austria Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, and Fly Dubai. New airliners are to join in 2015.

In addition, there are significant number of charter flights to and from Sarajevo International Airport, the largest biggest airport in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH).

"The business plans for 2015 include investments in infrastructure such are extended capacity of arrival area and passport control in departure area in Terminal B, as well as increased level of security of passengers, aircraft, buildings, baggage and goods," Velican said.

Sarajevo Airport was opened 45 years ago. During the wartime period from 1992 to 1995, it was used by international forces for humanitarian aims as well as peacekeeping forces of the United Nations. In 1996, the airport was reopened to civilian flights. Endit
