Nigerien Defense Minister Karidjo Mamadou stressed on Monday that the security situation in the African Sahel region is under control.

"The situation in the Sahel region is under control, and we are about to fulfill the elimination plan of the terrorist threat," the Nigerien official told reporters following his meeting with Algerian army chief of staff Lieutenant General Ahmad Kaid Saleh in Algiers.

He said the military cooperation between Algeria and Niger is successful, adding that the two neighboring nations have talked about all security issues prevailing in the region, especially at the level of the Joint Military Staff Committee of the Sahel Region (CEMOC), and in the framework of bilateral cooperation.

The CEMOC is a military mechanism set up in 2010 by Algeria, Niger, Mali, and Mauritania, which aims at fighting terrorism and organized crime in the region.

Mamadou further hailed efforts of both Niger and Algeria in order to restore peace and security in Mali and Libya.

The Nigerien defense minister is in Algeria as part of a delegation led by the Nigerien President Mahamdou Issoufou, who paid a three-day visit since Sunday at the invitation of his Algerian counterpart Abdelaziz Bouteflika. Endit
