Cibulkova defeats two-time Australian Open champion to reach last 8

Xinhua, January 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

Dominika Cibulkova reached the last eight of the Australian Open Women's singles on Monday, after beating the 2012 and 2013 winner Victoria Azarenka 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in the fourth round.

Cibulkova pounded 44 winners, including a dozen on her backhand side, and broke seven times to reach a Grand Slam quarterfinal for the sixth time.

Cibulkova lost the final here last year to the now-retired Chinese tennis star Li Na. She wants to terminate the regret this time.

"I just walked onto the court and all great memories came to my mind," she said, "I thought I'm a great player and I can do it."

Azarenka, who has defeated Li in the final 2013, unseeded this year after injuries restricted her to just nine tournaments last season.

Cibulkova will face top-ranked Serena Williams in the next round. Endi
