Mexican Vargas becomes WBC super bantamweight silver champion

Xinhua, January 26, 2015 Adjust font size:

Mexican boxer Giovanni "Rey" Vargas became World Boxing Council (WBC) super bantamweight silver champion after defeating Argentine Nestor Paniaguain in two rounds, local media reported Sunday.

The fight was held on Saturday night at Azul Hotel in Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, a southwestern Mexican resort.

Vargas totally dominated the fight, taking advantage of his condition by hitting hard against Paniagua, who was pinned on the ropes and fell down in the first round.

In the second round, Vargas kept his tough and fast blows that his rival could not dodge.

With the victory, Vargas is ready to face Leo Santa Cruz, the current world champion of the super bantamweight category. Endi
